Abstract
For the Na D lines the shift and width of resolved hyperfine structure components
are measured in He buffer gas with high-resolution laser saturation spectroscopy. The data obtained differ from those measured with Doppler-broadened optical spectroscopy. To explain the different values the existing density shift calculations have to be complemented by properly taking into account the effects of inelastic and velocity changing collisions.
