Abstract

Repurposing is an innovation strategy that involves taking a known solution and using it in a different context, adding a functionality that was not originally anticipated and is different from its intended purpose. Rooted in concepts such as bricolage and exaptation, repurposing is a promising way to bring innovations to market faster and at lower cost than de novo product development. Successful innovation through repurposing requires organizations to engage in a process of mapping, selecting, testing, and implementing existing technologies in order to integrate them into a new application domain. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can expediate this process.
