Abstract

This is the introduction of an edited volume, offering on the one hand a broad overview of developments of landless rural households in Europe based on recent historiography. On the other hand it summarizes briefly all the different contributions in the volume covering eight countries in north, west and southern Europe in the period from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries.
