Abstract

This introductory chapter places Companion Species in its scholarly and societal context. It is closely connected to changing visions of differences, particularly the constructed nature of the differences between human and non-human animals. It explains its role in hagiographical and animal studies. Containing chapters referring to saints in different religious milieus, Christian, Muslim, and Old Norse, it shows the diversity of animals and saints in medieval Europe.
