Abstract
In discussions about gene editing, it is regularly argued that we should not attempt to 'play God'. Strikingly, though, this argument is put forward by believers and unbelievers alike. Moreover, it is not only used as an objection against gene technology, but also as an argument in favor of it. So what could 'playing God' possibly mean? And how can the argument still play a role in public discussions about gene technology? This paper attempts to answer these two questions.
