    Abstract

This research focuses on the question of why young adults choose to continue living in rural areas. This aspect has been less explored in comparison to the reasons for young adults leaving rural areas. The research is part of the STAYin(g)Rural project and is based on survey data and biographical interviews conducted in three different regions: Oost-Groningen in the Netherlands, the Clogher Valley in Northern Ireland, and the Südharz in Germany.

The findings indicate that attachment to the region, an abstract sense of community, and the landscape play a significant role in their decision-making. The title "Journeys of staying rural" refers to the ongoing evaluation of rural preference among rural young adults. The majority perceive this as a free choice, sometimes influenced by life events. Emphasizing certain aspects of their rural identity helps them justify their decision to stay. They can also maintain their rural identity in less rural areas and rural areas outside their own region by partially adjusting their identity.

This research offers valuable insights for policy-making. It highlights factors that are worth focusing on in regional policies. Putting emphasis on poorly rated factors such as employment, housing, and amenities doesn't seem effective in retaining young adults. Additionally, there is potential in the timing of when young adults are supported to stay. An important recommendation is to shift efforts from attracting young adults to guiding those who have recently returned from urban areas.
