    Abstract

In the year 807, a man named Hrothelm appeared before Count Hunfrid at a place in lower Raetia called "the Manor near the Fields" to lodge a complaint about the loss of his farm. Although the count presided over the trial, the judgement was up to the scabini, local elites with a good reputation and legal experience. Only a couple of placita have come down to us in the archive of St. Gall.
