Abstract
Two patients in the course of protracted treatment with nitrofurantoin developed the picture of hepatocellular liver damage. Biopsy samples exhibited chronic active hepatitis and acute hepatitis with bridging necrosis, respectively. Discontinuation of the drug was followed by normalization of the liver tests in both patients, and by disappearance of the antinuclear and anti-smooth muscle antibodies observed during the treatment in the former patient.
