Abstract

Use of drugs of abuse among youth in The Netherlands is a growing concern. The use of 'designer drugs' and drugs of herbal origin are new developments in drug of abuse use. The use of the amphetamine derivative MDMA ('ecstasy') at 'house parties' and the use of mescaline-containing cacti and psilocyne-containing mushrooms are examples. The high frequency of reports of toxicity of MDMA makes clear that MDMA is not a 'safe drug'. This article gives an overview of the effects and adverse effects of 'designer drugs' and herbal drugs that are currently used by youngsters.
