Abstract

This thesis describes investigations of the mechanism of reduction of dinitrogen by systems consisting of n5-cyclopentadie-nyltitanium complexes and a reducing agent. Analysis of the reduced nitrogen- and titanium-containing products after hydrolysis of the reaction mixtures has been used to derive information about the reaction mechanism. Some general aspects of the chemistry of dinitrogen are outlined in Chapter I, starting with the physical properties underderlying its general lack of chemical reactivity. Transition metals can however activate dinitrogen by coordination. A brief survey of the literature on the bonding modes and reactivity of coordinated dinitrogen is presented, with particular reference to titanium complexes. ... Zie: Summary
