Abstract
This article presents a new market instrument to compensate for the earthquake damage that occurs in Groningen due to the extraction of natural gas. Earthquake certificates give home owners a right to yearly compensation by NAM (Shell/ExxonMobil) and the government, for both property damage and degradation of living space. These certificates are tradable within the Netherlands to stimulate the illiquid housing market in the province of Groningen.
