Abstract

The Dutch government participated in international missions such as those in Mali, Afghanistan, and South Sudan with military, police, and civilian personnel. An evaluation report shows limited positive outputs and was received negatively in the media. This op-ed discusses how an attitude of pessimism and cynicism is decidedly unhelpful, because missions - despite all their challenges and setbacks - are inherently necessary and useful in more ways than one.
