N2 - The present article considers creativity by analyzing the team work taking place in research and development departments of commercial enterprises. It discusses the relationship between creativity and innovation and develops a semiotically based typology of innovations in products, production processes, services, and organizations. Innovation is conceived as a knowledge-based process of problem solving, and the phases of this process are described as specific ways of interaction between sensory, coded, and theoretical knowledge. In conclusion, the consequences of this approach for an adequate knowledge management in individual as well as co-operative creative work are pointed out.
