Abstract

A key figure of photography in mid-twentieth Gaza, Kegham
Djeghalian Sr (1915-1981) documented the people and the city
for nearly four decades. A survivor of the Armenian genocide,
he founded Gaza’s first professional photography studio, Photo
Kegham, in 1944. His work ranged from formal portraits and of
official photographs to family albums and everyday life, offering
a visual chronicle of the city’s history and memory through its
turbulent transitions. In Photo Kegham of Gaza: Unboxing, his grandson, Kegham Djeghalian Jr, revives this legacy while exploring notions of disrupted histories.
