Abstract

Hydrogenolysis of (eta(5)-C5Me5)Hf(2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene)CH2SiMe3 leads to the formation of the mixed-valence tetranuclear polyhydride (eta(5)-C5Me5)(4)Hf-4-(sigma(1):sigma(1):eta(4):eta(4)C(6)H(8)(mu-H)(6) , with a central 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene-1,4-diyl fragment. The same reaction in the presence of LiCl gives chloride incorporation to yield the trinuclear species (eta(5)-C5Me5)(3)Hf-3(sigma(2):eta(4):eta(4)-C6H8(mu-H)(2)Cl-3.
