In intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), the tumour is irradiated based on complex radiotherapy treatment plans. The quality of these complex treatment plans are verified by patient specific quality assurance techniques using independent dose verification systems. In this thesis, the quality of such a 3D dose verification system has been studied. Furthermore, alternative approaches to enhance the efficiency of the pre-treatment dose verification procedure for IMRT have been evaluated. Results showed that high resolution 3D dose reconstruction can be performed using available low 2D resolution measurements. By combining calculation based dose calculations with measurement based dose reconstruction techniques, efficient and effective pre-treatment dose verification for target volumes and organs at risk can be performed. In addition, inclusion of dose-volume-histogram (DVH) action levels improve insight in dose delivery to target volumes and organs at risk allowing patient individualized dose verification.
