Abstract
The invention relates to a process for the production of furfural comprising subjecting a composition comprising a pentose, an alcohol, an acid catalyst, and balance water under conditions suitable to produce furfural, wherein the amount of alcohol is between 5 and 95% w/w relative to the total weight of the composition. This will improve the yield, TON, velocity, and selectivity of the reaction. The process is suitable for the use of a biomass-hydrolysate, which has the advantage that it results in production of renewable furfural.
