Abstract

Although the research base is scarce, clinical practice shows that some autistic individuals demonstrate and experience atypical or deviant sexual behaviors, feelings, and/or thoughts. Moreover, family members and involved professionals are often hesitant to discuss the topic of sexuality, which can cover up or escalate the problems. Therefore, this chapter discusses the relevant background literature, methods to assess psychosexual problems in autistic people, and methods to promote communication about psychosexual health issues and ultimately psychosexual health. Case examples are used to illustrate assessment and intervention. Future directions for research and clinical practice are discussed.
