Rewriting Joyce’s Europe: The Politics of Language and Visual Design

    Research output: Book/ReportBookAcademicpeer-review

    Abstract

Unique in its European scope and its dual linguistic-visual focus, the monograph explores ways in which Joyce’s texts respond to the widespread early twentieth-century nationalist practice of claiming territories and populations by imposing ethnically purportedly authentic names, languages, and alphabets. The book also demonstrates that Joyce’s textually attested interest in writing as visible language had its pragmatic parallel in the active role that the writer assumed within the rapidly changing world of European and North American print culture, exerting both direct and indirect influence on the paratextual features of his published works with a view to shaping their interpretation and socioeconomic value.
