Abstract

This thesis tries to identify risk factors involved in renal abnormalities in a nondiabetic population. This because nondiabetics only come to medical attention after the development of renal damage. Since diabetic subjects are being followed for their diabetic condition, we paid special attention to factors known to enhance renal risk in diabetics, such as hypertension, obesity and smoking. By identifying such risk factors in nondiabetics, these subjects at risk to develop renal function impairment can be identified and intervention to prevent renal function loss can be initiated in an early phase.
