Rurale metropool: Bevolking, migratie en financiën van de stad Groningen ten tijde van de Republiek (1595-1795)

In this economic-historical study from a geographical perspective, demographic developments (births, deaths, marriages, number of inhabitants) in the city of Groningen during the 17th and 18th centuries (the time of the Dutch Republic) have been reconstructed by means of serial sources such as baptismal registers and marriage banns, as well as funeral and civic registers. It also gives an account of the number and origin of immigrants to Groningen, based on extensive research into – partly similar – marital and civic registers. Within the same scope, it reconstructs and analyses the occupational structure of Groningen by means of guild- and tax rolls, providing an insight into the relation between the occupational structure of Groningen and the regions of origin of the occupants. This study concludes with a thorough analysis of the municipal finances during the same period and the way in which the central position of this most dominant provincial capital in the Netherlands was reflected by the financial policies of its city administrators. Thereby providing an insight into the economic development of the surrounding province of Stad and Lande too.
