    Abstract

    This article is a historical overview of the appreciation and study of classical Arabic poetry in the West - from a philological interest and enthusiasm in the Romantic period to an attitude of scepticism in the early twentieth century, and now a renewed interest in its study for the contextualization of early Islam.
