Abstract
The school system developed explosively in Sweden during the 20th century. From merely been provided with a basic education in late 19th century, all children were given access to primary school and, after finishing school, opportunities for post-secondary education. But with this expansion has also followed a recurring, and often sharp, criticism where different kinds of crisis scenarios have been described. Politicians, researchers and debaters have all expressed their dissatisfaction with the school in different ways.
In this book, a group of researchers shed light on continuities and changes in this school critique. They address debate issues such as sex education, school aesthetic education, international school statistics and students' writing skills.
The writers urge us to reflect on the different expectations that exist and the criticism directed at the school. How does the impression of crisis arise in school? What has the criticism been about and how has it affected education policy? This is a book that is important for everyone: politicians, teachers and the committed public.
