Abstract

In this video Daniël presents his research project 'Lost building traditions: turf construction and early medieval architecture in the southern North Sea area'. For this project he built the first reconstruction of an early medieval turf house together with tens of volunteers. Several societal activities were organised around the build and updates on the work were provided through the regional media, on the website and social media. The regional broadcasting network Omrop Fryslân produced an extensive documentary which was also broadcasted on national television. In the richly illustrated and accessibly written 'turf house book' Daniël presents the academic backgrounds of the reconstruction. For this remarkable building project, which was conducted in close cooperation with the province of Fryslân, Daniël was supported by many volunteers and colleagues and numerous funding bodies and project partners.
