Abstract

Alongside researchers analysing production spheres in film, television, and media studies, sociologists have been studying and theorising the making of cultural productions for several decades. Aiming to shed light on the potential benefits of interrelating these parallel fields of research, this chapter highlights characteristics of the sociology of art to outline how this field of research provides options for theorising production studies. Starting from methodological differences between the two fields, the chapter focuses on features of sociological approaches to researching cultural productions, illustrated with empirical examples from research with Danish filmmakers.
