    Abstract

Preceded by a short overview of their history, this essay summarizes the research from recent decades on historical recording and sound carriers. The first section focuses on material aspects of the latter, whereas the second discusses research on the history of music interpretation and performance practice based on historical recordings. The essay concludes by explaining why the source character of historical recordings is rather problematic and argues that musicological research on the history of performance might profit from a more profound understanding of the medial nature of historical recordings.
