Abstract

This thesis deals with surface photometry of face-on spiral galaxies in a statistical way, using both single passband as well as color information of a large sample of galaxies. In this chapter I first discuss galaxy formation and evolution models and the role that photometry plays in testing these models. Next some aspects of the (surface) photometry research field are reviewed. I conclude this chapter with an outline of my thesis.
