Abstract
Since the discovery of photochromism of the spiropyrans already in the 1950s, they have played a key role in the development of molecular photochemistry and especially in their application in materials and devices. In this chapter we will focus on the properties of spiropyrans and their response to a wide range of stimuli including protonation, and thermal properties as well as their photochemistry.
