Abstract

Developing a Population Insight Product (PIP) is a strategic and methodological challenge. Fortunately, healthcare professionals, researchers and policymakers can now benefit from a clear framework that helps them make structured use of health data. A Population Insight Product (PIP) is a data-driven tool that provides in-depth insights into the health status of a given population. It can be used to discover trends, track disease patterns or deploy health interventions more effectively. The power of a PIP lies in the fact that it helps healthcare providers make better, informed decisions and provide tailored care.
Developing a PIP requires more than just collecting data. It requires a systematic approach that allows data to be transformed into actionable insights. This is where the CRISP-PIP-DM roadmap comes into the picture. This model is a variation on the common CRISP-DM approach, but with adaptations specifically aimed at health data and the application of FAIR principles: data should be findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. The methodology included literature review, surveys, focus groups and benchmarking. Healthcare professionals from UMCG, Lifelines and GGD Drenthe provided feedback via surveys and a focus group. In addition, the plan was tested with the Datapoort core team and network partners and refined during mirror meetings in primary care midwifery sciences.
Thanks to participatory development and interdisciplinary collaboration, the framework aligns well with practice needs. The combination of CRISP-DM and FAIR principles promotes transparent and efficient data use, essential for Open Science and innovation in healthcare.
Healthcare is a dynamic and complex field, and often large amounts of data can be overwhelming. The roadmap helps to map this data in a structured way, making it easier for healthcare professionals to recognise patterns and respond to health issues. Whether it is about reducing healthcare costs, improving quality of care or promoting preventive care, a PIP enables informed choices based on data.
The benefits of the PIP roadmap include:
- Structured approach: It provides a clear framework for using data effectively, with a focus on reusable insights.
- Stakeholder engagement: The plan was developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals and researchers, making it directly relevant to practice.
- Integration of FAIR principles: This makes the data accessible, findable and interoperable, which is essential for the long term.
The roadmap was created through intensive cooperation between different parties. This cooperation resulted in an approach that takes into account both theoretical and practical aspects of data analysis in healthcare. By combining insights from data scientists and healthcare professionals, a balance has been struck between scientific rigour and practical applicability.
