Abstract
An X-ray diffraction study of μ-dinitrogenbis [p-tolyldicyclopentadienyltitanium(III)], [(C5H5)2Ti(p-CH3C6H4)]2N2, shows that the two titanium atoms in the molecule are linked by the dinitrogen ligand in an essentially linear manner. The titanium atoms have a pseudo-tetrahedral environment. The cyclopentadienyl rings are π-bonded to the Ti atoms; the ring planes are mutually inclined at an angle of 42.8° . The aryl groups are σ-bonded to the Ti atoms and are coplanar with the TiN≡NTi unit within 0.12 Å. Important bond lengths are Ti—N 1.962(6), N—N 1.162(12), Ti—C(σ) 2.216(7), Ti—10 C(C5H5) 2.355—2.380 Å.
