    Abstract

We have observed strong polarization dependence in the X-ray absorption near the oxygen K edge in a single crystal of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Tc=85 K). The results show that O-derived holes near the Fermi-level have px, y (perpendicular to the c-axis) symmetry. Some consequences for models of superconductivity are discussed. The concentration of holes is estimated to be about equal to that in YBa2Cu3O7
