Abstract
In this essay we will consider the problems in language and communication of children with autism, the role of these problems in the diagnosis of autism, and potential cognitive explanations for these problems. In particular, we will discuss the recent explanation that many of the characteristics of autism, including the problems in language and communication, are the result of an underlying broad impairment in predictive abilities.
