In the produced study, according to the title, there are three perspectives (language-didactical, culture-historical and edition-historical) on the exploration of the Hebrew Bible (“Biblia Sacra – Derekh ha-Kodesh”) published by Elias Hutter.
Elias Hutter (1553/4-1605/9?) was a linguist from Saxony who dedicated his life to spreading the knowledge of Hebrew in the late 16th century. For that he left his safe professorship in Leipzig. For him the Hebrew language was the divine protolanguage that could show mankind the way to salvation. In several places in the Holy Roman Empire (for example Hamburg and Nuremberg) Hutter tried to print and distribute his Hebraic books. In this context he developed the “Biblia Sacra - Derekh ha-Kodesh.” The singularity in this edition of the Hebrew Bible is that the print image shall simplify the learning of Hebrew. This language-didactical procedure is singular for this time. The method is embedded in a program of learning languages that is also presented in this study.
Hutter’s work is not purely a philological one and contains theological considerations. So the culture-historical circumstances that caused the making of this Hebrew Bible are thematized. Central here is the development of the Christian Hebraism and the political situation of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century.
The third question of the study concerns the sources Hutter used. It also shows which Hebrew Bibles were used in the early modern period. By using a Hebrew Bible of Hutter’s property it can also be shown how the Hebraist worked with his sources.
