Abstract
An estimated 200,000 people in the Netherlands with a psychiatric disorder continue to have serious mental health problems despite regular treatment. These chronic and difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorders have a major impact on the quality of life and functioning of patients, their family members and other next of kin. Precisely these treatment-resistant disorders contribute greatly to society's burden of disease, high healthcare costs and long waiting times in the mental health system. These disorders are responsible for a substantial reduction in life span, due to poorer physical health and suicide.
Unfortunately, few therapeutic innovations or new drugs have been developed in psychiatry in recent decades that have been able to break this deadlock. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have shown evidence that therapeutic applications of psychedelics (TAP) can provide significant improvements for patients with therapy-resistant psychiatric conditions and in (neurological) pain disorders. This report describes the state of the art in the field of TAP, the possible target groups and proponents and opponents, the knowledge gaps and barriers to research and implementation. It also identifies directions for solutions, particularly the establishment of a comprehensive nationwide research and implementation program.
