Abstract
What does aesthetic and artistic ‘sense-making’ mean in the context of perception-action? What are the (landscapes of) affordances connected to aesthetic experiences and artistic skills? What are the opportunities for action that aesthetic and artistic affordances provide? More broadly, how to account for cultural phenomena from an ecological psychological perspective? It is these and other questions which we will raise on this poster and hope to discuss during ICPA.
According to the biosemiotics perspective, which has a strong foundation in this research, sense-making can be described as an action in which a field of possibilities is interpreted into something modified. In addition, the realisation of a possibility is based on a complex sensorimotor process. The latter notion might allow us to connect it to ecological psychology. Such an attempt will either clearly contrast, bridge together, or merge the biosemiotic and ecological perspective. The aim is to tackle aesthetic and artistic sense-making as layers of sensorimotor organisation and resonance that are responsible for its three interlaced dimensions related to (realised) affordances: the perceptual (beauty), the behavioural (craftsmanship, technique), and the semiotic (sense, meaning).
