Abstract
While trauma theory in literary and cultural study has from its beginnings in the 1990s claimed to provide new tools for literary exegesis in the broadest sense of the word, later developments in the theoretical field have demonstrated the limitations of the theory. In particular the emendations offered by postcolonial writers have been instrumental in questioning and changing the universalist claims of the early theory.
