Abstract
This article discusses the impact of poverty on the family of Johanna Heggelman (1844-1912), and how following generations felt it difficult to shed the shame and talk about it. It looks at the issue through a biographical timeline of four generations of women, who survived all kinds of social and economic distress and eventually came out successful as entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry in Amsterdam, owning bars. It also discusses how the long stay of Johanna, the mater familias, in her childhood and youth, in the Colony of Veenhuizen in Drenthe, an establishment for the poor, gave her the skills and mind-set to overcome all trouble in life, and do so without the help of men.
