The epic poem of ‘Reynaard de Vos’ is been called the pinnacle of Dutch Gothic literature in The Netherlands and is therefore often rewritten and retold. How humanised are the animals in this rewritten stories? Jeltsje van der Mark researched this question for her Bachelor thesis by closely analysing five children books of Reynaard de Vos. What Jeltsje discovered was that the children’s adaptations of the story emphasize more on the human characteristics of animals, but that there are some exceptions.
