Abstract

The field of developmental psychopathology evolved from dissatisfaction with static models of pathology developed for the study and treatment of adults. Developmentally oriented theorists, researchers, and practitioners observed that profiles of psychological dysfunction in children tended to differ dramatically from those found in adults. Models of psychopathology that were grounded in the
study of adult psychopathology contained few provisions for understanding the origins and development of psychopathology over the course of ontogenesis. Since its inception, the term developmental psychopathology has served a dual function. It both names a field of study within psychology as well as a particular theoretical approach within that field (Cicchetti, 2006; Cicchetti & Toth, 2009).
