And Now for Something Completely Different or On the Importance of Not (Always) Being Earnest

Activiteit: Professional or public presentationPopular

Description

As C. Northcote Parkinson noted many years ago: a key person at the royal courts of Europe in ages past was the court jester. His role was to poke fun at (self-)important people and mock grand schemes for world domination. In politics this role is now sadly missing, but in science the importance of ridicule, and in general of not taking yourself too seriously is recognized in such noble institutions as the Ig-Nobel Prizes, and the Annals of Improbable Research. Writing articles for Annals of Improbable Research is at once an exercise in creativity and science writing, without all the hassle of actually having to do research, and pure unadulterated fun. It allows you to poke fun at both regular scientific thought and pseudo-scientific quackery. It is also a scientific way of letting your hair down, and escaping the treadmill of science writing, whilst still boosting your publication count. In this workshop I will discuss several pieces of improbable research originating from Groningen, covering topics such as a quantum mechanical interpretation of homeopathy, rhetorical logic and the Craske-Trump Theorem, and zero-tolerance math.
