Corpus-assisted discourse analysis (CADS) in practice

Activiteit: Organising and contributing to an event Academic

Description

Corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) is a specific type of discourse analysis, drawing upon both discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. It combines methods of text analysis commonly perceived as qualitative and quantitative. Corpus Linguistics investigates linguistic patterns in large amounts of language data. Corpora are normally interrogated using quantitative, statistical techniques that allow for retrieval of frequencies, keywords and collocations. Discourse analysis is qualitative and interpretative in nature and is based on close readings of texts, examining the interplay between context, text, and language.
The reconciliation of these two approaches have successfully been applied in a wide range of contexts, exploring news media discourse, language used in educational contexts, persuasion or public health communication . Such reconciliation would also be needed in the Discourse and Communication group specifically, and in CLCG more broadly where researchers would benefit from an opportunity to understand the benefits of the combination of discourse-focussed qualitative and quantitative research paradigms.
The CIS programme and the DISCO groups currently lacks an expertise in corpus linguistics, and as a results students also miss out on the opportunity to become familiar with the methodology, despite its usefulness in their destination professional contexts.
The main goal of the two-day event is primarily capacity-building. It is aimed at researchers in CLCG who would like to develop an understanding about CADS and gain hands-on experience applying it. It is also aimed at postgraduate students to acquire the basics of corpus-construction and the use of an analytical software.
