“Doing Research in your Research Time. Some Practices.”

    ICOG event: The recent staff survey at the RUG made explicit what researchers in the humanities have experienced for a long time: increasing, often teaching-related, managerial tasks eat into our research time. While our collective discourse mostly focuses on why research time forever seems to seep away in between the cracks of teaching and management, this afternoon is dedicated to the protection of research time and what measures we may take as a faculty on the level of Clusters, research institutes, programmes, chair groups and the individual to make 40% research time really 40%. A teaching-free quarter, blocking days in electronic calendars, generating funds for short sabbaticals, or simply closing your doors, turning on an out-of-office message and never participating in afternoons like this one - there are many ways to effectively protect your time. Based on good practices, how can we collectively work towards an institutional mind-set that promotes such measures?
