European Green Deal: The New Driver of the Energy Transition in the European Union?

Activiteit: Professional or public presentationProfessional

Description

I analyzed how the EGD builds on previous energy and climate legislation adopted by the European Union between 2003 and 2018, as well as its new elements. The new elements include the Just Transition Mechanism, the European Climate Law, and four strategies for the energy sector: hydrogen, energy system integration, methane emissions reduction and offshore renewable energy.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the EGD continues to be a priority in the EU’s agenda. On October 8th, the European Parliament approved the proposal for a European Climate Law that enshrines into law a 60% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a climate neutrality goal by 2050.

In the coming months, the European Council and negotiations between the European Parliament and Member States will define the future of the EGD.
