Exploring (di)terpenoid diversity for sustainable crop production

With an increasing demand for food and renewable energy opposed by climate-driven crop losses, understanding and leveraging plant natural defenses can enable the development of sustainable crop production systems. Terpenoids are a large and diverse group of molecules that directly contribute to the plants’ fitness and survivability, but their biosynthesis and ecological functions are still widely unexplored in many crops. Therefore, we integrate comparative omic approaches with reverse genetics to gain a detailed understanding of the diversity and physiological relevance of (di)terpenoids in a range of bioenergy, food, and forage crops. Through discovery and engineering of these terpenoid networks we hope to ultimately nurture the development of a new generation of crops which will contribute to regenerative and circular agricultural practices.
