Panel Discussant: EU-East Asia Relations: Relations with ASEAN and Europe's Pivot to Asia (Joint panel RC03/RC18). This panel critically examines the European Union’s relations with East Asia. It examines the challenges that the EU faces in playing a role as an influential player in the Asian region while seeking to maintain its close relationship with the US; its burgeoning relationship with China and the engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The panel examines hard and soft power aspects of this engagement. It assesses the changing role of the EU and ASEAN, in inter-regionalism and foreign policy dialogue. It analyses the interaction of the EU and East Asia in terms of economic relations; democracy and human rights promotion and political and security cooperation. It examines crisis response and security policy. The panel examines the relationship in the various regional forums within the Asian regional architecture. It seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the changing policy contexts and the role of summitry and personality in this engagement.
