This scoping review provides an overview of lab-based tests for anaerobic and aerobic handrim wheelchair-specific exercise capacity in wheelchair athletes. Test protocols can vary and should be standardized to eliminate possible influences of protocol design on the attained outcomes, while still respecting the unique athlete. Consequently, we aim to propose a standardized, yet individualized test protocol for future research. A scoping literature search in four databases was conducted in February 2021 and resulted in 10 anaerobic and 38 aerobic unique protocols. A large variety in equipment, protocol design and reported outcomes was found, which makes it difficult to interpret the test outcomes and compare these among the heterogeneous group of wheelchair athletes. Studies that systematically investigate the influence of protocol features on test performance are lacking. Protocol design was often dependent on participant characteristics and/or previous visits to the lab. However, specific guidelines for individualisation were missing. Yet, the common protocol features of the different studies were united into guidelines that could be followed when performing standardised and individualized wheelchair-specific exercise capacity tests in wheelchair athletes. Together with guidelines regarding reporting of participant characteristics, used equipment and outcome measures we hope to work towards more international agreement in future testing.Periode | 27-jul.-2021 |
