The benefits of a well-managed Current Research Information System (CRIS) and the role the library can play within an academic hospital

Many universities and medical centers use a ‘CRIS’ (Current Research Information System) to collect all the publications and other scientific output of their institution. However, even when the same system is used, the way that it is operated differs between institutions. This is not only true for the data that we collect, but also how we work with the data after it has been entered into the CRIS. When the library manages the CRIS, it gains a central position in the institution when it comes to research. The library guarantees that the data is entered into the CRIS and that the data is correct. It also provides the opportunity to create other services for researchers, departments and in fact the whole organization. In a large organization, like an academic hospital, data about research is needed/required for various purposes, from managerial needs to clinical research policy making and more. A CRIS, for example, not only gives you the possibility of monitoring the percentage of open access of your institution's output, but it also provides the ability to make closed access publications available for the public and thus increasing the visibility and reusability of your institution’s research. Another example is research assessment or analytics on department or research program level. Since it is not possible to search in citation databases for a specific department of your institution, your CRIS is the place to find a verified set of publications for the group that you want to analyze. A well-managed CRIS also has direct benefits for a researcher. It can fill the researcher’s institutional profile page with his publications or research activities. An institution should be proud of its researchers and display them on their website with a full profile of their academic work. A profile page not only for researchers, but also for departments is therefore the public front of your CRIS. In this workshop we will look at and exchange experiences about CRIS systems, the different ways they have been implemented and what role the library can play. The benefits of linking Altmetric, SciVal, ORCID, institutional profiles, Meltwater, Data Monitor will be explored as well as other ways to use the data in your CRIS system such as Unpaywall.
