Description

The Central Achaia Phthiotis Survey (CAPS) is a cooperative project of the University of Alberta, and the Ephorate of Antiquities in Larissa, Greece. CAPS explores the landscape around the site of the Kastro at Kallithea in the ancient region of Achaia Phthiotis, lying on the western end of the plain of Almiros. which can be characterized as a border zone. This landscape’s multifarious nature as a boundary region, and a conduit area, also harboured long term communities of centrality and belonging with high connectivity levels to neighbouring regions.

Due to the pandemic, fieldwork in 2020-2021 was conducted out on a limited scale. Only in 2022, could the team return to full capacity. This paper will present the combined results of two aspects of the project: 1. The LiDAR survey carried out in 2020, which focused on a 1500 hectares maquis covered area, including the slopes of Kastro where multiple early Iron Age tholos tombs were found during our 2019 pilot season. 2. The results of the intensive survey of the cultivated fields in the Kampos and Gogou areas, north of the Kastro, carried out in Fall 2021 and the summer of 2022. CAPS has now surveyed more than 400 hectares of cultivated fields. Similar to what was observed earlier, we once again encountered a robust archaeological record, with a strong concentration of material dating to the Early Neolithic, and many concentrations of Classical/Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman finds, testifying to long term human activity in this presumed ‘marginal’ landscape.
