The linkages between livestock and greenhouse gas emissions: regulating dietary change?

Along with Luis Enrique Arbelaez, I delivered a speech at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 ESOF2022 Leiden Leiden2022 , presenting our research on the role of law and governance to reduce the impact of the agricultural sector on greenhouse gas emissions.

We analyzed the evolution of the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1990 to 2022 on the relationship between climate change and the agricultural sector, and the role of dietary changes.

These are some of our conclusions:

    •      Dietary shifts towards plant-based diets as a mitigation measure against climate change are gaining importance in the IPCC reports since 2014.

    •      The implementation of policy and regulatory instruments to reach dietary changes towards plant-based diets is in its infancy.

    •      Mitigating climate change through dietary changes involves to change underlying determinants of human behavior.

    •      To achieve a healthier, more sustainable, plant-based diets, it is necessary to implement integrated strategies, policies, and measures as economic incentives, inclusion of sustainability criteria in dietary guidelines, labeling, education programs, good governance, and policy coherence.
