Workshop: Hands-on experinece with an optical motion capture system for motion analysis

Department: RuG, UMCG, Center of Human Movement Science, Skillslab

Supervisors: Mohammed Khudair, BSc, and Helco G. van Keeken, PhD

Motion capture systems are versatile tools that are used in many different settings, mainly to track and analyse movement in humans, animals and objects, but also in virtual reality (VR), robotics and animation. They are used in clinical contexts in the analysis of movement in patients, such as gait analysis in elderly who show reduced walking velocity as a result of age-related loss of function and strength. They are also used in sports contexts in the biomechanical analysis of sport-specific movement, such as running gait in elite runners where shortcomings that may lead to significant improvements in performance can be observed and analysed.

Optitrack is an optical marker-based motion capture system used to track movement in 3D, offering high-quality optical motion detection. This system can be used together with other instruments, such as electromyography (EMG) sensors and force plates, to provide an in-depth analysis.

The objective of the workshop is to provide hands-on experience with this motion capture system, as Human Movement Sciences students do as part of the Skillslab assignments. During the workshop, participants will learn the first steps of setting up and using the system themselves, and use the system to conduct a small-scale experiment, which will provide insight into its functionality in research.
